Hydrological situation for December 2020
by EFAS Hydrological Data Collection Centre
During the month of December, the area with the highest concentration of stations that exceed their lowest threshold was Italy, in the Po river basin, with nearly 40 % of stations exceeding. The situation in the Danube river basin is also notable, with a high density of stations in Croatia (mainly in the Sava and Kuppa rivers), Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Austria, with a lower concentration in Slovakia, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine, Germany, and Romania. Other stations in Bosnia and Herzegovina (the Neretva river basin) and in Slovenia also have exceedances. To a minor extent, in Spain there are overshoots in nearly 50% of the stations on the Minho river basin and in some stations in the east of the country. In central Europe there are more scattered stations located along the Oder and Vistula basins in Poland, and on the Rhine basin in Germany. Five stations can be found in Iceland and four more stations in the south of the Scandinavian peninsula. Finally, there are single stations in Israel and Ukraine (Dnieper basin) with values above their thresholds.
Regarding stations registering values above the 90% quantile, these are mostly located in the Scandinavian basins, where the largest concentration of stations is located in Norway, mainly in the southern basins (Drammen, Glomma and Skien) followed by northern Norwegian stations, then the northern stations in Sweden and Finland. Another high density of stations can be found in the Danube river basin passing through Austria and in a lower concentration when crossing Czech Republic, Romania, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. To a minor extent, stations also exceeding the 90% quantile occurred in several stations in the Iberian Peninsula (mainly for stations in the Ebro basin and for isolated stations in the Minho and Guadaldalquivir basins). In Ukraine, three scattered stations on the Dnieper and Dniester basins are above the 90% quantile. Other isolated stations registering values over the 90% quantile can be seen on rivers in the east of Scotland and the south east of England.
At last, stations registering values below the 10% quantile are mainly located in Germany (Rhine, Danube, Elbe and Oder basins), Ukraine (Dnieper, Dniester and Danube basins), and the southeast of Sweden with a remarkable concentration of stations. A lower density of stations can be found in the central Danube basin (Serbia and Romania). Isolated stations also showing values below the 10% quantile are located in the Bobr river (Poland), Lagen river (Norway), and Thames river (England).
